4 Things To Know About Online Craps Before You Start

The first thing to know about playing Craps online is that it isn’t as hard as it looks. Many first time online Craps players take one look at the Craps table layout, realize they don’t know the first thing about how to play Craps online, and go play something else instead.craps dice

These four simple pointers will help you hit the ground running as you play Craps online for the first time.

  1. It Doesn't Matter Who Rolls The Dice
You could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, because of how the game is portrayed in movies or on TV. But in reality, Craps is just about betting on the outcome of the dice roll. Whether or not you are the 'Shooter' is irrelevant.
  2. 7 Is The Magic Number
The Shooter rolling a 7 will always signify the end of the round, and the beginning of another. The majority of Craps bets are won or lost when this number comes out. We will explore these in further detail in the next section.
  3. You Can Bet Anytime
Bets can be made at any time while playing Craps online. Even if you yourself aren’t the ‘Shooter’ (the person rolling the dice), you can still place as many bets as you like before each roll. Similarly, you can make bets throughout the round, not just at the beginning – keep reading for more detail on this.
  4. House Edge Is Important
Throughout this online Craps guide, we will refer to what is known as the ‘house edge’. Put simply, this is the amount of each bet you should expect to lose, on average. This edge is what gives the Craps casino its profits. A lower house edge = a greater chance of profiting on the bet in the long term.

Online Craps – How To Play

Think of online Craps in terms of rounds. Every round is ended when the Shooter rolls either a 7, or the Point Number. You’ll know a new round is beginning when the Craps puck, seen just above the Don’t Come Bar in our images, shows the word ‘OFF’.

Each round begins with the shooter rolling the dice – this is called the Come Out roll. Bets can be made on this roll, but it has a secondary function: setting the Point Number. These are the three possible outcomes:

  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: The number rolled becomes the Point Number. No-one wins or loses at this stage.
  • 7 or 11: Pass Line bets win, and a new round begins.
  • 2, 3, or 12: Crap Out – all bets lose, except for Don’t Pass bets and bets on these three numbers.

The Shooter then keeps rolling until they get either the Point Number or a 7. At this point, the round ends and another begins with a fresh Come Out roll. While all this is going on, there are a great many Craps bets which can be made – read on for our definitive guide to all of them!

Craps Table Layout

Throughout this page, we have used only one kind of online Craps table layout in order to keep things as simple as possible. Although it is a standard Craps table layout, you will more than likely find a slightly different layout when you begin playing Craps online for real money.

Despite this, the areas of the table – and particularly the most important areas like the Pass Line and Come bar – will be in a similar place and clearly marked. The Craps proposition bets are the ones which are most likely to vary, but don’t be afraid to ask the casino support or dealer for help.

The 4 Best Craps Bets For Beginners

Playing and winning at online Craps is just a matter of knowing a few simple bets. Stick with these, and you’ll be giving yourself the best possible chance to win. And once you’re comfortable playing Craps online, you can expand into the many other Craps bets available to you.

Pass Line (Blue)

This bet is made before the first roll of the dice in the round (the Come Out roll). You win if the person rolling (the Shooter) rolls a 7 or 11. You lose if they roll a 2, 3, or 12.

If the Shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, and then rolls the same number again before rolling a 7, you win. If a 7 comes out first, you lose.

Don’t Pass (Red)

The opposite of the Pass Line bet, this bet is also made before the Come Out roll. You win if the Shooter rolls a 2 or 3, you lose if they roll a 7 or 11, and if they roll a 12 your bet is returned to you. This is called a Push.

If the Shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 (marked on the image in green), and then rolls the same number again before rolling a 7, you lose. If a 7 comes out first, you win.

Come (Turquoise)

This is similar to the Pass Line bet, but made after the Come Out roll establishes a Point Number – this can be any one of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

If the Shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, and then rolls the same number again before rolling a 7, you win. If a 7 comes out first, you lose.

Don’t Come (Orange)

This is similar to the Don’t Pass bet, but as with the Come bet, this bet is made after the Come Out roll establishes either 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 as the Point Number.

If the Shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, and then rolls the same number again before rolling a 7, you lose. If a 7 comes out first, you win.

How To Win At Craps

Unfortunately, there’s no foolproof strategy that you can use for guaranteed wins every time. But the four bets outlined above will enable you to hit the ground running as you learn how to play Craps online.

Thanks to their low house edges, you’ll be giving yourself a good chance of winning even while learning the ropes – even if they don’t show you how to win at Craps every time. Players of online Blackjack use similar strategies of lowering the house edge as much as possible in order to increase their chances of winning.

Playing the odds by mainly making bets that have a low house edge, mixed in with the occasional long-shot, is a solid strategy for any Craps online game. Our dedicated Craps strategy page goes into further detail on the various methods you can use to stretch your bankroll further and land those big wins.

Online Craps House Edge Example

A Pass Line bet has a house edge of 1.41%. If you make 100 Pass Line bets of $1 each, you will have bet $100 in total. 1.41% of this is $1.41, which is the amount you will lose after betting $100, according to the mathematics.

Of course, these are just based on calculations and averages – the whole point of playing Craps online is never really knowing what will happen!

Craps Best Bet

The most sensible way to measure which is the best bet in online Craps is to use the one with the lowest house edge – as this gives you the best return on your bets. And strangely enough, the online Craps best bet is one which doesn’t even have a dedicated space on the Craps table layout.

The bet we are talking about is called Taking The Odds, or Pass Line Odds. This is one of the very few bets in all online casino games which carries a 0% house edge. That means that statistically, the house has no built-in advantage over you. The one caveat of this is that in order to make this bet, you have to have already made a Pass Line bet, which carries a house edge of 1.41%. But on the plus side, you are reducing this house edge considerably by Taking The Odds.

As with many online Craps bets, Taking The Odds has an opposite: Laying The Odds. You are betting on the opposite outcome, but the house edge is still 0%.
